Job of the Week – Check your support systems
Job of the Week
Check your support systems
As we are now into February and spring is fast approaching, make sure that your plants and vegetables have all the support they need. If you are growing items like tomatoes, runner beans or any climbing plant make sure that you have all the correct support systems in place to help them grow.
If you have plants growing up a trellis, make sure that they are still nicely tied in and supported before they flower in spring. You can make your trellis part of the display because there are many designs to choose from. From free-standing screens and square lattice panels to pots that are fitted with cylindrical trellis for climbing plants.
For vegetables that have not germinated yet, organise and clean up your canes ready for use. Although not technically a support system, if you are using cloches, maybe give them a clean and check for holes to ensure nothing can get through.
Time to Harvest
Your herbs
One of our first sow your own blogs was Basil. If you decided to pot up some fresh herbs on your windowsill or in your green house, they are more than likely about ready to be used. Harvesting home grown herbs is pretty simple, simply take a pair of scissors and cut what you need. Depending on what herb you’re trimming maybe look up where you should cut, for example cutting rosemary will be different from cutting basil. If you don’t want any to go to waste, you can always cut up your herbs and freeze them and use in cooking as and when you need them. The flavour will be just as good when cooked and defrosted.
