Front gardens come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. They can be a beautiful and decorative introduction to your home, but these days they are more commonly used for a functional purpose, like a space to park your car or to store wheelie bins. A fence can completely change the overall look of your garden, but it can be difficult to know what appropriate fencing and gate you should choose. So I’ve put together some suggestions, along with a few tips.

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ layout=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none” last=”no” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all”][fusion_text]

Selecting the appropriate fence…

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

A fence can absolutely change the look of your garden and the way your house is viewed. Ensure you consider the purpose of the fence as this is very important. Maybe your looking for privacy or security, to keep animals and children in and safe, or maybe you’re looking for a decorative feature. More common than not a front garden fence is lower than that of a back garden. Be sure to pick a style that’ll suit your house – perhaps there’s a particular look you have on the inside that you could replicate in the garden. There are many different types of fencing, so let’s take a look at a few:

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

Picket fencing

[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”2_5″ layout=”2_5″ last=”no” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=”” min_height=””][fusion_text]

This is very common to use in front gardens. They are very recognisable with their neat and evenly spaced vertical boards. They offer a decorative, safe and clear boundary, but they won’t give you much privacy. Conventionally, you will find they are wooden and painted white.

Trellis

Traditional lap panel fencing

This is the most common type of garden fencing. It’s main purpose is to provide excellent privacy and security.

Top Tip: select a fence which is attractive on both sides. After all, you are going to be the one staring at it every day.

Railing

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

Railing is a beautiful option for the front garden. Normally they are metal, sturdy and are great in harsh winters. You can choose a very flamboyant design that will really make a statement, or you choose a more understated option for a clean, modern, and sleek feel to the garden.

Choosing the right gate…

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

A garden gate acts as a portal and entrance to your private space from the outside world. In addition, a gate can help to finish the look of your fence or wall. Picking the right gate is crucial, and, again, it’s always a good idea to keep the purpose of the gate at the forefront of your mind.

Wooden gates

Gates commonly are made from wood or metal but both can serve a very different purpose. For a more sturdy but traditional option, wood is your best choice. As well as providing privacy, wooden gates can be extremely decorative.

Top Tip: ensure you choose a wood that will  match any existing fences as this will give you a more streamlined feel to your garden.

Metal gates

[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

Metal gates are classy and will look more formal. They are frequently made more open using bars therefore making them less private than a wooden gate. However, metal will last longer, so is often the preferred option for front gardens.

We are looking at having some gates put up in our yard in order to help keep our dog in. Of course, we want something that will also add to the style and aesthetic appeal of our home. There are so many options, but like you said, the metal gates are very classy and formal. Thanks for sharing!

It was nice that you talked about how recognizable picket fences are because they are usually painted in white coats and are looking neat. This is the kind of fence that I’m looking for because I want my garden to look clean and organized in the best way possible. It will be ideal for me to consider picket fences so I can achieve a garden that looks appealing and clean.

Thank you Ava, your feedback is fab. Happy gardening 🙂

My husband and I recently moved into a new home that has no fence system, and we are looking to install on so we can feel safer in our home. Your article had some great tips for choosing the right fence for our home, and I really like the look of the white picket fence. While these fences look very neat, they don’t offer much privacy, and we’ll be sure to keep this advice in mind when adding a fence to our property.
