Plant of the Week – Daffodils
Plant of the Week
Daffodils
You may have seen your supermarkets filling up with these simple, yet beautiful blooms. It’s that time of year where the weather begins to warm up, and Daffodils are almost ready to bloom. They are winter hardy flowers and will flower annually if grown correctly.
They are low maintenance to grow and will thrive in most soils. If they are being grown in the ground, once planted and watered in to help them settle, they don’t need any additional watering – unless there are long, dry spells.
Traditionally planted in garden borders, they can also be planted in pots or containers. Another great way of growing them is to naturalise them into your lawn. Their gorgeous, yellow petals and trumpet-like shape are normally the first sign of spring. Most daffodils will produce one to three flowers in the first spring after planting, and will continue to flower and put on a springtime display for about 4 or 5 years.
After flowering, remove the faded flowers which will refocus their energy to the bulb rather than producing seeds.
