Plant for July | Lavender
Lavender
With its bushing habit, vivid flowers and pleasing scent, lavender is a real cottage garden staple.
A favourite for bees and other insects, it is a must have for any wildlife garden too!
Where to plant
Lavender enjoys full sun and well-drained soil. They struggle in heavier soils such as clay and loam, causing the plant to be short lived, but this can be prolonged by adding organic matter to the hole while planting to increase drainage.
They also thrive in pots and raised beds.
Special care
Prune annually to maintain a bushy appearance. This should be done with sharp scissors or secateurs. Removing the flowers and approximately 3cm of the new year’s growth. It is important that some green remains at the top of each stem.
